I love the new poster, too! There's something so epic and stoic about Merida. Why couldn't she have had sisters? Where were the mothers of these suitors? For all the chest-puffing Pixar is doing about having a female protagonist, they don't seem to be writing her story any differently than they would have written for a male protagonist - so was the point to just have straw female? But it's still disingenuous to portray a female protagonist as having no female friends and making her world almost exclusively male. Thus Merida is surrounded by men and sees herself placed in 'male' situations, as Mulan was, so that it can be OK for boys to go see the film. Think about it - beyond Merida, her mother and the witch - who else is there? I'd wager it's because Pixar still believes that young women can't be funny (didn't Lottie disprove that in a big way?) or don't want to risk alienating boys. I bet the scene reads better in the film itself, but it was the first time I thought maybe this movie won't be as good for it's unseasoned directors (more Mark Andrews than Brenda Chapman, who successfully directed The Prince of Egypt with others).įor a movie centered around a girl, the majority of the cast is male and the jokes are male-centered. The jokes don't quite land in the banter between Fergus and Merida, whose scowliness and sarcasm I usually love, or with Young Macintosh with all his swagger and snit-having, the adoration of which feels unearned for his female fans (a lot of girls like a boy + he's a git = boy, girls sure are dumb!). The clip sounds a lot like the one previewed at D23 last August, so we can assume this one has been done for some time.
